Listening facilities

A complete set of recordings, on CD, together with summaries and supporting information, is held by the Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton.  There is a duplicate set at the North Devon Record Office in Barnstaple.  Listening facilities are available and anyone wishing to hear the recordings should contact the relevant office.

A set of recordings is also available at the Guildhall Heritage Centre in Dulverton. The centre is open from Easter to end-October, 10.30am - 4.30pm (Enquiries tel. 01398 323818).

Short audio clips from all the recordings can be listened to on this site.  An audio CD with longer extracts from a number of the recordings is included in the book REFLECTIONS, life portraits of Exmoor, which accompanies the archive. [Back to top]

Summaries

The summaries available on this website are a guide to the full contents of the recordings.  Please note that some are given in greater detail than others. Although they are as accurate as possible, they are working documents and it is important that they are viewed as a complement to the audio archive, not a substitute.  The views expressed are those of the contributors.

Producing the summaries has been an enormous task for the project volunteers, to whom we are very grateful.  If you have any comments or queries, please email Birdie Johnson. [Back to top]

Reproducing the information

All recordings are copyright © Birdie Johnson, LifeStories. The recordings on this site are for private listening only and copying, broadcasting or reproduction is prohibited.  While we welcome students' and researchers' interest in the archive, no extracts from the recordings or their summaries may be used for commercial purposes or public performance without prior authorisation.  Should you wish to do so, please email Birdie Johnson. Searching the site

A site specific search can be done through Google's advance search facility by typing the domain name only - www.somerset.gov.uk (i.e. omitting '/archives/exmoor') - and including the phrase 'oral history'.  Then follow the instructions to find what you are interested in, e.g. evacuees, the National Park Authority, etc.

When searching the archive, you will want to bear in mind that a number of abbreviations have been used.  For instance, the National Park Authority is also referred to as NPA, ENP, NP.  The same applies to other organisations. [Back to top]
