Gerald Winzer runs marathons, and has done for 20 years. He is a familiar sight on his daily run across Exmoor, covering nearly 100 miles in a week at the peak of his training. He went in for his first race when he was a teenager, running through the heather on Winsford Hill in grey flannel trousers. When he's not running he looks after his smallholding and is a dedicated player of whist, going to as many as eight whist drives in one week.
Apart from national service, he has lived in Exford all his life. He was the local postman for 41 years, taking on a walking round at Simonsbath in the days when the postman would also deliver newspapers and medicine.
While still at school he started working for the hunt kennels and hunting is in his blood. If he had his life over again, he says, he would love to have been a jockey.
