This pack contains material illustrating
early opposition to King Charles I, the conduct of the war with
references to the sieges of Dunster Castle and Taunton, the skirmish at
Marshall's Elm near Street and a secret code for "cyphering", the
sufferings, both physical and financial, of those involved on both sides
with petitions to Quarter Sessions for aid and a list of Sir Edmund
Wyndham's losses in the war, a selection of medicinal remedies of the
time, the imposition of Puritan ideas with references to putting down
parish revels and forbidding maypoles and, after the restoration of King
Charles II, evidence of lingering affection for the Commonwealth and
dislike of the Monarchy in Somerset.
