This pack contains documents and
pictures illustrating the celebrations in Somerset for Queen Elizabeth
II’s coronation on 2 June 1953, focusing on celebrations based in the
local community.
The celebrations often included a
tea for children and/or old age pensioners, games and sports, the
distribution of souvenirs, dancing and bonfires. Many places also hired
televisions for the occasion – a new and exciting novelty.
The pack includes newspaper reports
about the celebrations, advertisements, programmes of events,
personal reminiscences, and photographs of souvenirs and of local
parties.
This topic fits well into KS2
Britain since the 1930s, and also into a local study that looks at the
impact of a national event on a locality. |
