This pack contains
documents and photographs illustrating the celebrations in Somerset on
the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee 2 June 1897.
There are posters
(click for example) advertising the celebrations at Cannington and a
programme of events at Chewton Mendip. There are photographs of street
decorations in Crewkerne and a
dinner
in Minehead. Children were given Jubilee mugs or medals and there is
a photograph of these and one of a class of children wearing their
medals. Extracts from school log books show that the children were given
a holiday from school, some marched in procession through the streets,
others were given tea. Newspaper accounts of the celebrations describe
church services, street decorations, bonfires, fireworks, sports and
entertainments. There are references to parishes erecting permanent
memorials such as church clocks, statues of the Queen, public seats and
village halls
