This pack contains a selection of documents relating to various aspects of 19th life in Taunton.  It has five sections:

1. Shops and shopping
2. Schools
3. Houses
4. Transport
5. Entertainment
 

It also contains a colour extract from the 1849 map of Taunton.

The Shops section includes advertisements for different types of shop, entries from trade directories, a census extract showing a local businessman’s household and employees, and selections from local firms’ accounts.

Schools includes an advertisement for Haines Hill Preparatory School for Young Gentlemen, a lessons plan and log book entries from South Street Boys’ School, rules and regulations of Taunton Central School, and extracts from Learning to Read, a school textbook published in 1820.

The Houses section comprises a plan and elevation of houses built at the corner of Silver Street and Alma Street and an extract from the 1891 census showing residents of Silver Street houses.

Transport includes advertisements for hotels and coach services, posters for the railway and omnibuses, an account for carrying a prisoner to London in 1822 and extracts from the Taunton Courier concerning the Taunton and Bridgwater Canal, 1827-1828.

The Entertainment section contains posters for a Grand Public Entertainment, Ryan’s Olympic Circus and a dinner to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.
