Document Packs
Cover of SRO booklet containing examples of 16th century documents

This pack has three sections:

1. Domestic Life
2. The Reformation
3. Defence, Foreign Policy and Exploration

Domestic Life contains material more suited to Key Stage 2 pupils or the less able older child. It includes an inventory of furniture at Nettlecombe House, a description of Montacute House and its gardens, the rules for serving meals, dance steps, illustrations of clothing, the funeral of Elizabeth I and two pollution problems

The Reformation is aimed at Key Stage 3 or A-level students. There are extracts from parish churchwardens accounts showing how church decoration and furnishings changed in Edward VI's reign and extracts from Somerset wills, showing the change from bequests to altars and lights in parish churches and to chantry priests for singing masses for the soul of the deceased to bequests of money and food to the parish poor

Defence, Foreign Policy and Exploration is again aimed at the older student. There are instructions to watchmen to light beacons on the approach of enemy ships, a letter and certificate concerning sending Somerset men to fight in Ireland with a colour map showing the siege of an Irish castle and an account of Sir Francis Drake's last voyage to the West Indies in 1595.
